engine vibration management & performance solutions

Overview

Axiam's expertise is in the delivery of repeatable engine assembly processes that result in significant cost savings through much lower vibration, improved engine performance, improved engine life and longer time on wing. Assembly turn time, spares utilization and the machining of component parts are markedly reduced. Axiam offers the only turnkey, repeatable, computer-driven engine assembly process solutions available in the marketplace today. Our assembly processes depend upon highly accurate parts measurement and data processing by its robust applications software. Axiam's assembly processes control existing variables and avoid the introduction of any new variables through its customized tooling and assembly procedures. Axiam performs shop reviews and analysis to modify current practices that impact assembly. Working with the shop's engineers, new parts tolerances are established that are necessary to achieve repeatability. The repeatable assembly processes incorporate predictive applications software, custom tooling, proprietary procedures, training, on-going service and high-precision measurement.

The Company

Axiam, Inc., incorporated in 1983, manufactures, sells and services proprietary productivity solutions for "best fit" turbine engine assembly and rotor vibration management for the global maintenance, repair and overhaul market.

The Problem

Engine vibration must be minimized to avoid engine wear, improve efficiency and extend engine life. In the typical gas turbine assembly process, a trial-and-error process is used to measure and stack rotating components. After assembly, the entire rotor is then balanced with weights placed at strategic points on the disk to compensate for stack eccentricity and non-linearity. These manual assembly processes rely heavily on individual mechanic skills, inadequate measurement tools or rudimentary software in an inherently unrepeatable process. Consequently, overhaul shops incur significant costs meeting the maximum allowable engine runout tolerances resulting in sub-optimal engine performance and life.

The Axiam Solution

The Company provides repeatable engine assembly processes that include predictive applications software, tooling, proprietary assembly procedures, high-precision measurement gauges, training and service. Our turnkey assembly processes enable customers to achieve unprecedented cost savings, engine performance and engine life. Our customers have enjoyed cost savings for medium-sized engines that range from $1.5 million to $40 million annually in spare parts, assembly time, parts machining, fuel consumption, engine life, performance, quality and longer time on wing. This technology transforms a trial-and-error process into a rational, controlled procedure.

Our People

Axiam's experienced staff of aeronautical engineers have designed engines, tooling and assembly procedures for a wide variety of aero and industrial turbine engines. We work closely with customers in the early stages of a project to analyze the impact of assembly activities upon repeatable engine processes. Axiam's engineers will make specific recommendations for any required changes in their assembly procedures to achieve process repeatability.
